thumbnail Internal CDC Documents Reveal They Manipulated Data To Conceal A Link Between Autism & Vaccines

A Foolish Faith In Authority Is The Worst Enemy Of The Truth”– Albert Einstein

By Vera Sharav

Note from the World Mercury Project Team:  Following is Part Six in Vera Sharav’s seven-part exposé of the complex and widespread corruption that exists in the vaccination program, the deceptive practices by officials of “authoritative” international public health institutions and further evidence of the callous disregard for the plight of thousands of children and young adults who suffer irreversible harm. Sharav’s research is a must-read by those in our community.

This recourse to authority is an attitude reminiscent of the American eugenics movement, when public health officials and academics at elite universities, embraced the pseudo-scientific tenets of eugenics, which were the basis for abhorrent discriminatory policies, including forced sterilization policies that were launched in the USA.[60]

The internal CDC documents reveal that in addition to major methodological flaws and inconsistencies, CDC scientists and Danish scientists collaborated in outright fraud. Thorsen and his co-authors manipulated the results by excluding the largest outpatient clinic in Copenhagen – comprising 20% of autism cases in Denmark – from the pre-1992 cohort – thereby artificially inflating the autism incidence in Denmark after 1992 when thimerosal had been eliminated from children’s vaccines.

Furthermore, the authors of the Pediatrics (2003) article falsified their findings by omitting the 2001 data from their published report. The published report claims an astoundingly high (implausible) increase in the autism prevalence rate in Denmark after the phase-out and removal of thimerosal between 1990 and 1999.

This case reveals much about the corrupted vaccine literature. Indeed, the research community has not only failed to examine Thorsen / CDC research fraud, journal editors are knowingly facilitating fraudulent research articles to influence vaccination policies that put thousands of children at risk, depriving them of living normal lives.

The publicly accessible, internal CDC correspondence[1] allows anyone to trace the underhanded route that led to the publication of the Madsen/Thorsen/ et al report in the journal Pediatrics – after it was rejected by the Lancet and by JAMA. A written communication between Dr. Thorsen and high ranking CDC official, Coleen Boyle (2003) reveals that when the paper was first submitted to Pediatrics with the 2001 data included; it was criticized by one peer-reviewer:

“The drop of incidence shown for the most recent years is perhaps the most dramatic feature of the figure, and is seen in the oldest age group as well as the youngest.” The reviewer questions the authors’ failure to discuss “the possibility that this decrease might have come about through elimination of [T]himerosal.”

The internal CDC documents further show that CDC brought pressure to bear on journal editors to publish the Danish studies. Dr. Cordero, Assistant Surgeon General, National Center on Birth Defects & Developmental Disabilities used his influence to persuade Dr. Lucey to publish the Madsen / Thorsen study, “Thimerosal and the Occurrence of Autism”

worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Cordero-Lucey–300×86.jpg 300w, worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Cordero-Lucey–768×219.jpg 768w, worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Cordero-Lucey–196×56.jpg 196w” alt=”” width=”800″ height=”228″ data-lazy-type=”image” data-src=”https://worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Cordero-Lucey-.jpg” data-srcset=”” />

“I am writing in support of an expedited review and consideration of the enclosed manuscript… Specific aspects of vaccinations have been subject to inquiry includ[ing] the MMR vaccine and thimerosal…For thimerosal there are limited data…The Danish study is a powerful epidemiologic study …a key strength of the study is the ability to examine rates of autism prior to and after the discontinuation of vaccines containing thimerosal in Denmark in 1992. Contrary to what would be expected if thimerosal was linked to autism, the authors did not observe a decline in the rate of autism with the removal of thimerosal…

Its findings provide one strong piece of evidence that thimerosal is not causally linked to autism.” [Exhibit V: Cordero letter to Lucey]

How is it that even as thousands of journal papers are retracted from the scientific record – Retraction Watch counted more than 14,000 retractions– some are retracted for spurious reasons, others provide no  explanation – yet, deliberately manipulated, fraudulent reports that were crafted to conceal vaccine safety hazards, have never been removed from the scientific literature. In fact, they continue to influence public health policy inasmuch as they were published in “authoritative”  “high impact” journals.

  • In the case of Pediatrics, a fraudulent study was published despite the fact that its editors knew that the 2001 data was omitted from the final version.
  •  US public health officials not only failed to disavow the fugitive’s research, federal officials have continued to collaborate and to co-author papers with him.
  • Dr. Thorsen continues to collaborate with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network.
  • Federal dollars continued to flow to studies in which he was or is involved.
  • Thorsen is the named author of at least 19 reports following his fugitive status – “after his “disappearance”. The journals include: Pediatric Neurology (2016), PLoS One (2015), Pediatric Research (2014), Journal of Autism Development (2013), PLoS One (2013) (NCBI search)
  • Both the HHS and DOJ continue to use his research as grounds to reject vaccine injury claims in the National Vaccine Injury Compensation.
  • No retraction of the articles he was associated with during and subsequent to his 2004 to 2010 alleged criminal activities has occurred.
  • The entire US public health machine acts as if the indictment never occurred.

Public health officials and the news media are using fear and exaggeration about the risks of infectious disease in the U.S., as well as the risks posed by un-vaccinated children, which is pitting neighbor against neighbor and parent against parent. They use the classic divide and conquer strategy.

Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), responded to Thorsen’s indictment stating:

“even if the allegation against Thorsen is true, it does not mean his science is bad… Let’s assume it is true that he embezzled money, the notion that it casts the science into question is false. For these big epidemiological studies, it is hard to believe that one person could effectively change the data.” (Philadelphia Inquirer, March 2010)

Dr. Offit is considered to be a leading authority, an ardent and outspoken vaccine defender/ promoter. This statement encapsulates the low regard that vaccinologists have for the integrity of vaccine science. Of course, like most vaccine promoters, Dr. Offit’s blatant conflicts of interest have enabled him to “vote himself rich”. [61]He is quoted in Newsweek (2008) stating that the millions he made from the rotavirus vaccine patent: “was like winning the lottery.

I believe that even if the allegations of embezzlement are not true, the evidence is indisputable that the studies produced by Poul Thorsen, and published in premier medical journals, are fatally flawed. By altering the inclusion criteria, excluding data that contradicted the authors’ claimed conclusion relegated the study to the ash heap of fraudulent junk science.

Furthermore, the following two studies “were conducted and results published without legally–required ethics clearances.”

CDC officials knew that the psychiatric registry records were reviewed without required permissions and they covered it up. In what are completely unethical acts by all involved, the team members went into damage control mode and decided that they likely could obtain permission for ongoing and future studies.

They concluded that it would probably be impossible to get permission for research that was already finalized (and published). It is absurd that experienced federal grants management officials even discussed the idea of seeking a human subject safety review retroactively. These are serious ethical violations. [sic] they shed light on the pervasive culture of corruption at the CDC.[62]

In January 2013, a Congressional hearing on autism[63] convened by the Government Oversight Committee.

Dr. Coleen Boyle (had by then been promoted to) Director of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, and Dr. Alan Guttmacher, Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Institute of the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD) defended their agencies but provided no substantive information.

Boyle and Guttmacher evaded pertinent questions. When asked about why the number of children with autism has surged, they testified that autism has no known cause or cure; their focus was statistical tracking and detection tools.

  • When asked if CDC had sought constituent input?
  • Are there studies looking at the very aggressive way that we’re over-vaccinating our children”?
  • Are you looking at the impacts of combinations of vaccines”?
  • Boyle responded, “We know that vaccines save lives.”
  • No response was given to the following questions:
  • What steps were taken to ensure the integrity of the studies in which Thorsen was involved?
  • Why did the FDA and HHS take thimerosal out of all children’s vaccines except just the one or two or three, if there was no problem?
Both Republicans and Democrats were exasperated by the evasive responses.
  • Dr. Boyle finally acknowledged: “We have not studied vaccinated versus unvaccinated [children]”.

Dr. Guttmacher tried to impress the committee with non-specific claims of accomplishments: the NIH $169 million budget allocation for autism in 2011; he claimed “effective interventions…recent advances in networks” but could not give an example of an effective autism treatment resulting from the last 10 yrs in which the NIH had spent $500 million dollars on autism research, Dr. Guttmacher responded that progress had been “elusive” due to lack of funding. He did not wish to respond to the question, why thimerosal was still used in multi-vial vaccinations?

worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Cong-Elijah-Cummings-196×209.jpg 196w” alt=”” width=”232″ height=”247″ data-lazy-type=”image” data-src=”https://worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Cong-Elijah-Cummings.jpg” data-srcset=”” />“I’m just sitting here, and I’m listening to all this. There’s something wrong with this picture. There’s something wrong… When you’ve got this combination of shots, and you go from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 88, it seems to me somebody would say, wait a minute, let’s put the brakes on this, and at least let’s try to figure out whether the multiple-shot situation is causing this —

If I’m giving a baby nine shots in a day whether that—I mean, how much impact that’s having… you said there’s a body of evidence with regard to vaccines…

Mr. Chairman, I don’t know where we go from here… if we’re going to err, let’s err on the side of keeping children safe even if we have to [sic] do a pause and give one shot a day.”

Mark Blaxill, the author of The Age of Autism (2010), which documents that autism did not exist before the introduction of vaccines in the 1930s. Blaxill presented testimony on behalf of Safe Minds:

Autism is a public health crisis of historic proportions. Autism is a public health crisis of historic proportions. Worse than poliomyelitis. It’s devastating a generation of children and their families. We need to face up to the reality Autism is a national emergency. Autism rates didn’t just rise, they multiplied. The old surveys didn’t just miss 99% of children with autism.

It’s horrible but true; reported rates of autism have risen simply because there are more cases of autism. In the midst of this crisis, the federal agencies responsible for the health of our nation’s children have failed in their duty. CDC’s negligence has led the way. Many believe CDC has actively covered up the evidence surrounding autism’s environmental causes.

NIH has received the lion’s share of Congressional funding, money they have wasted on status quo research and gene studies. It’s absurd to focus on genetic research in this crisis, there’s no such thing as a genetic epidemic. In the financial world, the result of the pressure to manipulate numbers to provide the answers bosses want has a name – securities fraud…what CDC has given us is the medical equivalent of securities fraud. All to avoid the inconvenient reality of the autism epidemic.

In 2006, Congress gave the NIH a mission to “combat autism.” You authorized $850 million for that mission… NIH spent most of that money on the great autism gene hunt while blackballing environmental researchers and defying parent concerns. It’s been a colossal waste of money and time. Not a single case of autism has been prevented. Not a single child received improved treatments. We need to conduct independent research into the great unmentionables, mercury, and vaccines, connections that we’ve documented in the earliest cases.

We need accountable new leadership. Please root out the failures, the waste, the fraud, the negligence and the abuse of these agencies that aren’t doing their jobs.”  Blaxill’s latest book, co-authored by Dan Olmsted is DENIAL: How Refusing to Face the Facts about Our Autism Epidemic Hurts Children, Families, and Our Future (2017)

Cong. Bill Posey made an announcement, and submitted new information for the Congressional Record: “I have information that the fugitive doctor had been involved in [sic] 21 of the 24 studies with CDC”.

Another Major Episode of CDC Fraud & Scientific Malfeasance Came to Light

worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Dr.-William-Thompson_CDC-300×151-196×99.jpg 196w, worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Dr.-William-Thompson_CDC-300×151-145×73.jpg 145w, worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Dr.-William-Thompson_CDC-300×151-250×125.jpg 250w” alt=”” width=”300″ height=”151″ data-lazy-type=”image” data-src=”https://worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Dr.-William-Thompson_CDC-300×151.jpg” data-srcset=”” />In 2014, Dr. William Thompson, the senior CDC epidemiologist who co-authored the 2004 study published in Pediatrics blew the whistle and revealed that fraud had been committed by CDC authors (himself included) to conceal the higher risk of autism for African American baby boys who were vaccinated prior to 36 months and prior to 24 months of age. Beginning in 2013, in taped conversations with Dr. Brian Hooker, Dr. Thompson revealed how CDC destroyed evidence of the risk for autism. He provided primary documented evidence – a copy of data that had been deleted from the published article in Pediatrics (2004) the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.[64]

“We hypothesized that if we found statistically significant effects at either the 18-month or 36-month threshold, we would conclude that vaccinating children early with the MMR vaccine could lead to autism-like characteristics or features.”

worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/CDC-vaccine-Fraud-study-2-1-300×119.jpg 300w, worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/CDC-vaccine-Fraud-study-2-1-768×304.jpg 768w, worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/CDC-vaccine-Fraud-study-2-1-1024×405.jpg 1024w, worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/CDC-vaccine-Fraud-study-2-1-196×78.jpg 196w” alt=”” width=”1223″ height=”484″ data-lazy-type=”image” data-src=”https://worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/CDC-vaccine-Fraud-study-2-1.jpg” data-srcset=”” />

When CDC scientists did find a statistically significant causal relationship between MMR and autism in African American boys, according to Dr. Thompson’s eyewitness account, CDC removed 260 black baby boys from the dataset and destroyed the data. The analysis in the published report in Pediatrics misrepresents the risk of having eliminated data from the dataset. That constitutes fraud.

worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/CDC_deleted-MMR-data_Thompson-768×434-300×170.png 300w, worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/CDC_deleted-MMR-data_Thompson-768×434-196×111.png 196w” alt=”” width=”768″ height=”434″ data-lazy-type=”image” data-src=”https://worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/CDC_deleted-MMR-data_Thompson-768×434.png” data-srcset=”” />

Dr. Thompson stated that he wrote a letter alerting Dr. Julie Gerberding to the findings and suggested that the Institute of Medicine safety review committee should be informed of the risk, prior to its consequential February 2004 meeting. Dr. Thompson was reprimanded for contacting Dr. Gerberding and was put on administrative leave. He was threatened with being fired.  In his taped conversation with Dr. Hooker – which was central in the film Vaxxed – he expressed shock by his own action:[65]

“Oh my God. I cannot believe we did what we did. But we did.” “It’s the lowest point of my career, when I went along with that paper. I went along with this, and we didn’t report significant findings.”

“I am completely ashamed of what I did. I have great shame now. I was complicit, and I went along with that paper. I have great shame now, when I meet families with kids with autism, because I have been part of the problem.”

Dr. Hooker re-analyzed the complete CDC dataset in 2014, including the data that had been omitted from the published study in Pediatrics (2004). It showed statistically significant adverse effects at both 24 months and 36 months (RR 3.36, 95% CI 1.50-7.51, p = 0.0019).  The higher relative risk of autism for African American infant boys, vaccinated with MMR prior to 36 months, was (330%) compared to other babies. His re-analysis was published online by Translational Neurodegeneration on August 8, 2014:[65]

worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Dr.-Brian-Hooker-196×187.jpg 196w” alt=”” width=”205″ height=”196″ data-lazy-type=”image” data-src=”https://worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Dr.-Brian-Hooker.jpg” data-srcset=”” />“The present study provides new epidemiologic evidence showing that African American males receiving the MMR vaccine prior to 24 months of age or 36 months of age are more likely to receive an autism diagnosis.

The results show a strong relationship between child age at the administration of the first MMR and autism incidence exclusively for African American boys which could indicate a role of the vaccine in the etiology of autism within this population group. The particular analysis was not completed in the original Destefano et al (CDC) study… the CDC study limited the total African American cohort to include only those individuals who possessed a valid State of Georgia birth certificate which decreased the statistical power of their analysis.”

However, Dr. Hooker’s article came under attack; pressure from the shadowy cyber enforcement squads,[66] that act as a police force to suppress every independent vaccine study that challenges the mantra: “there is no link to autism… vaccines are safe and effective”.

On August 27, the journal removed Hooker’s article with the statement: “This article has been removed from the public domain because of serious concerns about the validity of its conclusions. The journal and publisher believe that its continued availability may not be in the public interest”. There was no specific fault or mistake cited.[68]

On the same day that Dr. Hooker’s article was removed from the journal’s website, Dr. Thompson acknowledged the following in a statement issued by his lawyer (August 27, 2014):

“I regret that my co-authors and I omitted statistically significant information in our 2004 article published in the journal Pediatrics. The omitted data suggested that African American males who received the MMR vaccine before age 36 months were at increased risk for autism. Decisions were made regarding which findings to report after the data were collected, and I believe that the final study protocol was not followed.”

“My concern has been the decision to omit relevant findings in a particular study for a particular subgroup for a particular vaccine. There have always been recognized risks for vaccination and I believe itis the responsibility of the CDC to properly convey the risks associated with receipt of those vaccines.

I have had many discussions with Dr. Brian Hooker over the last 10 months regarding studies the CDC has carried out regarding vaccines and neurodevelopmental outcomes, including autism spectrum disorders. I share his belief that CDC decision-making and analyses should be transparent.”

Dr. Thompson then forwarded the documents to a U.S. Congressman William Posey who has repeatedly requested a congressional investigation.[69]

“Mr. Speaker, I believe it is our duty to insure that the documents that Dr. Thompson are not ignored. Therefore I will provide them to members of Congress and the House Committees upon request. Considering the nature of the whistleblower’s documents as well as the involvement of the CDC, a hearing and a thorough investigation is warranted.“So I ask, Mr. Speaker, I beg, I implore my colleagues on the appropriations committees to please, please take such action.”

On August 26, 2014, Sharyl Attkisson, an investigative journalist who earned numerous awards as CBS science correspondent (1993-2014), conducted taped telephone interviews with Dr. Frank DeStefano,[70] Director of CDC Immunization Safety, who co-authored the Pediatrics (2004) study.

He confirmed the verity of the confessions of CDC whistleblower, Dr. William Thompson about the omission from the published Pediatrics report, of children in the dataset, for whom there were no birth certificates here.

In a telephone interview, DeStefano defended the study and reiterated the commonly accepted position that there’s no “causal” link between vaccines and autism. But he acknowledged the prospect that vaccines might rarely trigger autism.

worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Dr.-Frank-DeStefano-300×168-196×129.jpg 196w” alt=”” width=”300″ height=”198″ data-lazy-type=”image” data-src=”https://worldmercuryproject.org/wp-content/uploads/Dr.-Frank-DeStefano-300×168.jpg” data-srcset=”” />

“Wouldn’t say it’s a myth, I’d say[sic] all the evidence, thus far, points to that there’s not a causal association between vaccines and autism…It’s a theoretical possibility…It’s hard to predict who those children might be, but certainly, individual cases can be studied to look at those possibilities.”

Attkisson writes, “They’re not even trying. A CDC spokesman told me that:

“the agency is not currently investigating the relation between vaccines and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Further, CDC does not have any planned research addressing vaccines and autism. CDC believes that this topic has been thoroughly studied and no causal links have been found. Current CDC ASD related research focuses on determining how many people have ASD and understanding [other, not vaccine-related] risk factors and causes for ASD”.[71]

When Dr. Thompson attempted to leave, CDC gave him a $24,000 bonus – a retention fee. Apparently, CDC continues to employ Dr. Thompson, because they feel more secure with him as an agency employee, enabling them to scrutinize his activities.  Clearly, they feared his being outside the agency, which would risk that he might disclose additional CDC secrets.

CDC Continues to Conceal the Authentic 1999 Verstraeten VSD Study Findings.

When a request was filed with CDC to provide Dr. Verstraeten’s original dataset for independent analysis, CDC officials claimed the data were “lost.”  Even after approval was granted, Dr. Mark Geier was blocked from gaining access to CDC’s Vaccine Safety Dataset which is the data CDC relied upon its study published Pediatrics.  CDC continues to disseminate false reassurances in its “Science Summary Fact Sheet” claiming: “The evidence is clear: thimerosal is not a toxin in vaccines… there is no relationship between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism in children.” As its “evidence,” CDC cites the Danish studies.

In January 2017, the President and Executive Vice President of the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a press release in opposition to a federal vaccine commission on immunizations.

Fernando Stein, MD, FAAP and Karen Remkey, MD, MBA, MPH, FAAP stated: since we already know that: “vaccines are safe. Vaccines are effective. Vaccines save lives.” AAP declared that there is no need for further examination pf vaccine safety:

  • Vaccines prevent forms of cancer.
  • Claims that vaccines are linked to autism have been disproven by a robust body of medical literature.
  • Claims that vaccines are unsafe when administered according to the [CDC’s] recommended schedule have likewise been disproven by a robust body of medical literature”.

However, when asked to provide citations to any peer-reviewed study that supports AAP’s claim that “vaccines prevent forms of cancer” or to cite the “robust body of medical literature” that supports its claims, the AAP declined, with a “no comment” response. (Immunization News, 2017)

WMP NOTE:  This concludes Part Six. The final segment of this series will be entitled:  Multiple Industry-Saturated Collaborating Partners Set the Agenda for Vaccination Policies.

Previously published articles: Sharav’s Introduction to the full article,  L’affaire Wakefield: Shades of Dreyfus & BMJ’s Descent into Tabloid Science, outlines her well-researched and documented belief that, “Public health officials and the medical profession have abrogated their professional, public, and human responsibility, by failing to honestly examine the iatrogenic harm caused by expansive, indiscriminate, and increasingly aggressive vaccination policies.” Part One focuses on how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the vaccine industry control vaccine safety assessments, control the science of vaccines and control the scientific and mass channels of information about vaccines. In Part Two Ms. Sharav interprets the complex web of internal CDC documents, revealing how key CDC studies and CDC-commissioned studies were shaped by use of illegitimate methods. Part Three takes a closer look at the Brighton Collaboration and the extraordinary influence these stakeholders have in the business of vaccines and their power to control the science and research and manipulate reports to further their own interests. Focusing on the HPV vaccine, in Part FourMs. Sharav explores how a global network of government/academic and industry stakeholders can suppress information about genuine scientific findings and, when needed, engage in corrupt practices to thwart the airing of information about vaccine safety issues. CDC’s childhood vaccination policy rests on the denial of safety hazards posed by vaccines and CDC officials are intent on shielding the policy and vaccination schedule at any cost. Part Fiveexamines documentation and internal correspondence that reveals how CDC used its influence and subsequently rejected scientific studies that contradicted the sacrosanct vaccine safety mantra.

thumbnail The Real Power of The Placebo Effect, Explained

Feb 12th 2018, 16:33, by Kalee Brown

When I was really young, whenever I felt sick, my grandmother used to make me cinnamon sugar toast. I felt like I could taste her love with every bite, and by the time I had finished my toast, my stomachache would have magically disappeared. In hindsight, I recognize that the dairy in the butter and the refined sugar in the cinnamon blend probably weren’t helping my digestive issues, yet somehow this meal always made me feel better. How does this make any sense? Herein lies the mystery of the placebo effect.

No, science cannot prove that when my grandmother delivered me cinnamon toast with a loving smile and a giant hug, I instantly felt better, but as a five-year-old child I certainly experienced that. Though my grandmother may not have realized it, she was likely harnessing the power of the placebo effect.

What Is the Placebo Effect?

The placebo effect is essentially the idea that your brain can convince your body that a fake treatment, because it (your brain) thinks it’s real, can provide real solutions and stimulate healing in the body. In essence, the placebo effect shows us how powerful our minds, how powerful our consciousness is, in that we can change our biology using our beliefs.

Many of you may have played around with the concept “You become what you think about most of the time,” meaning your thoughts literally become your reality. Businessmen like Kevin Trudeau have used it to make billions of dollars, and many people including myself enjoy witnessing the law of attraction in our everyday lives. However, how does this work when it comes to our health?

Well, science is starting to realize that, in some cases, a placebo can be equally as effective as the original treatments themselves.

“The placebo effect is more than positive thinking — believing a treatment or procedure will work. It’s about creating a stronger connection between the brain and body and how they work together,” says Professor Ted Kaptchuk of Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, who has studied the placebo effect extensively.

However, Kaptchuk believes that the placebo effect can only go so far. “Placebos may make you feel better, but they will not cure you,” says Kaptchuk. “They have been shown to be most effective for conditions like pain management, stress-related insomnia, and cancer treatment side effects like fatigue and nausea.”

It’s people like Kaptchuk who are challenging the way the scientific community typically looks at the placebo effect. In the past, placebos have been used in clinical trials, most often in drug tests, and were typically associated with failure. The mentality was that if you weren’t one of the participants who got the drug, you didn’t receive the benefits. Alternatively, if both groups of participants — those who received placebo pills and those who actually took the drug — experienced similar effects, then the drug was deemed ineffective.

However, scientists are now starting to realize that similar reactions may not mean a drug doesn’t work, but rather that the placebo is actually working in a similar fashion. What if these participants believed they were taking the drug, and thus experienced health benefits as a result? Experts have concluded that reacting to a placebo doesn’t mean a certain treatment doesn’t work, but rather that an alternative, non-pharmacological treatment may be present.

The Science Behind the Placebo Effect

Though we don’t understand how the placebo effect actually works just yet, a Harvard University article explains that “it involves a complex neurobiological reaction that includes everything from increases in feel-good neurotransmitters, like endorphins and dopamine, to greater activity in certain brain regions linked to moods, emotional reactions, and self-awareness. All of it can have therapeutic benefit.”

“The placebo effect is a way for your brain to tell the body what it needs to feel better,” says Kaptchuk.

“When you look at these studies that compare drugs with placebos, there is the entire environmental and ritual factor at work,” explains Kaptchuk. “You have to go to a clinic at certain times and be examined by medical professionals in white coats. You receive all kinds of exotic pills and undergo strange procedures. All this can have a profound impact on how the body perceives symptoms because you feel you are getting attention and care.”

A study published in Science Translational Medicine that was conducted by Kaptchuk in 2014 tested the placebo effect in relation to migraines. One group of participants took a migraine drug that had the drug’s name listed on it, another group took a placebo labelled “placebo” (meaning they were conscious that they were the placebo group), and a third group took nothing. Shockingly, their findings showed that the placebo was 50% as effective as the actual pain medication after experiencing a migraine, despite the participants having known who was in the placebo group and who was not.

The researchers concluded that this was largely due to the simple act or ritual of taking a pill, as it’s considered to be comforting to people.

“People associate the ritual of taking medicine as a positive healing effect,” says Kaptchuk. “Even if they know it’s not medicine, the action itself can stimulate the brain into thinking the body is being healed.”

This is comforting to learn, as this suggests that you yourself could administer the placebo effect, despite you knowing that it is simply placebo and nothing more. Kaptchuk actually has some suggestions as to how you can facilitate this yourself.

“Engaging in the ritual of healthy living — eating right, exercising, yoga, quality social time, meditating — probably provides some of the key ingredients of a placebo effect,” says Kaptchuk.

Another study published in 2002 in the New England Journal of Medicine(1) conducted by the Baylor School of Medicine, looked at surgery for patients with severe and debilitating knee pain. The patients were divided into three groups. One group endured the first type of knee surgery, as the surgeons shaved the damaged cartilage in their knees. Another group had their knee joints flushed out, removing all of the material believed to be causing inflammation. Both of these processes are the standard surgeries people go through who have severe arthritic knees.

The third group received a “fake” surgery, as the patients were sedated and tricked into thinking that they actually had knee surgery. The doctors still made incisions and splashed salt water on the knee as they would in normal surgery, and then they sewed up the incisions, but without performing any real surgeries on their knees. All three groups went through the same rehab process, and the results were astonishing. The placebo group improved just as much as the other two groups who had surgery.

Another 2002 article published in the American Psychological Association’s Prevention & Treatment, conducted by University of Connecticut Psychology Professor Irving Kirsch and titled “The Emperor’s New Drugs,” made some more shocking discoveries (5)(4). Kirsch found that 80% of the effectiveness of antidepressants, as measured in clinical trials, could be attributed to the placebo effect. Kirsch even filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to get information on the clinical trials of the top antidepressants.

“The difference between the response of the drugs and the response of the placebo was less than two points on average on this clinical scale that goes from fifty to sixty points. That’s a very small difference, that difference is clinically meaningless,” Professor Kirsch explains (source).

A Conscious Note

Some of this information may not be new to you, as monks and other teachers have been preaching the power of the mind for years. Many people have been successfully using a combination of thoughts, meditation, and emotional healing to cure diseases for a very long time.

For example, radiation oncologist Dr. Carl Simonton and his wife Stephanie Matthews-Simonton, a psychologist, wrote the book Getting Well Again: A Step-by-Step Self-Help Guide to Overcoming Cancer for Patients and Their Families. The book explores how people can affect their disease process through healing their emotions.

Louise Hay is another well-known author who discusses the emotional causes of cancer in her book You Can Heal Your Life. A cancer survivor herself, she cured her disease in only six months using a combination of affirmations, visualization, nutritional cleansing, and psychotherapy. According to Hay, cancer is simply the manifestation of deep hurt, secrets, longstanding resentment, grief, and/or hatred.

The mind can be an incredible asset when it comes to your physical and mental health, but it can also contribute to your illnesses. Negative self talk can lower your vibration and increase your stress levels, and chronic stress is associated with countless diseases, including cancer.

I personally believe that your thoughts become your reality, and I have experimented with this and found it to be true in all aspects of life, including health. If you believe that you can heal yourself through positive self talk and other modalities using the mind, then I believe you’re increasing your chances of succeeding in improving your health. Likewise, if you don’t believe your mind can change your overall health, then you probably won’t see any notable differences because that’s what you believe!

thumbnail Ibuprofen Can Stop Your Heart (31% Increase In Cardiac Arrest Risk)

Feb 12th 2018, 13:06, by Collective Evolution

According to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death among adults over 40 in the United States and other countries, with about 326,200 people experiencing an out-of-hospital SCA each year in the US alone; nine of 10 victims of SCA will die.1

Surprisingly, however, the causes of SCA are still widely considered unknown. Instead, the medical profession opts for pointing the finger at vague risk factors, such as family history, previous heart problems, or elevated LDL cholesterol (a long debunked surrogate marker for heart disease].

But what if something so obvious and preventable as the consumption of NSAID drugs could be contributing to this health epidemic?

New Study Reveals Heart-Stopping Side Effects of NSAIDs

In a concerning press release issued by the European Society of Cardiology entitled, “‘HARMLESS’ PAINKILLERS ASSOCIATED WITH INCREASED RISK OF CARDIAC ARREST,”2 researchers warn that painkillers considered harmless by the general public are associated with a significantly increased risk of cardiac arrest.

The report was based on a study entitled, “Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug Use Is Associated With Increased Risk of Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: A Nationwide Case-Time-Control Study,” published in the March issue of European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Pharmacology.

Professor Gunnar H. Gisalson, one of the lead researchers explained in interview:

“Allowing these drugs to be purchased without a prescription, and without any advice or restrictions, sends a message to the public that they must be safe.”

“Previous studies have shown that NSAIDs are related to increased cardiovascular risk which is a concern because they are widely used.”

The study looked at a total of 28,947 patients who experienced an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Denmark over the course of a decade. Heart attack differs from cardiac arrest in that the former involves damage to the heart when the blood supply stops (usually through obstruction of circulation), whereas the latter involves damage from the heart itself stopping. 3,376 of these were treated with an non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) up to 30 days before the event. The most common NSAIDs used were ibuprofen (51%) and diclofenac (22%).

The study results revealed that NSAID use was associated with a 31% increased risk of cardiac arrest. Ibuprofen and diclofenac increased the risk by 31% and 50%, respectively. Naproxen, celecoxib and rofecoxib were not associated with increased cardiac arrest.

Gunnar remarked on these findings:

“The findings are a stark reminder that NSAIDs are not harmless. Diclofenac and ibuprofen, both commonly used drugs, were associated with significantly increased risk of cardiac arrest. NSAIDs should be used with caution and for a valid indication. They should probably be avoided in patients with cardiovascular disease or many cardiovascular risk factors.”

This is not the first time that ibuprofen’s profound cardiotoxicity has come to light. We reported on the subject five years ago in an article entitled, Ibuprofen Kills Thousands Each Year, So What Is The Alternative?

We strongly agree with Gunnar’s closing interview remarks when he says:

“The current message being sent to the public about NSAIDs is wrong. If you can buy these drugs in a convenience store then you probably think ‘they must be safe for me’. Our study adds to the evidence about the adverse cardiovascular effects of NSAIDs and confirms that they should be taken seriously, and used only after consulting a healthcare professional.”

Keep in mind that other common pain-killers, such as aspirin and acetaminophen (Tylenol), also have devastating side effects that are commonly underreported or minimized. You can read our previous writings on the topic:

thumbnail Was Quetzalcoatl An Extraterrestrial? Here’s How Mesoamerican “Mythology” Described Him

Feb 11th 2018, 23:31, by Arjun Walia

With the recent release of the Pentagon’s UFO footage, which comprised of two videos filmed by U.S. Navy pilots of objects performing maneuvers that defy our current understanding of aerodynamics, the topic of UFOs has once again grabbed headlines around the world.

The video was a step forward towards disclosing the fact that there are unknown objects in our atmosphere that are commonly spotted and tracked on radar by defence authorities. They are highly technologically advanced, more so than any air-craft which is available in any global inventory at the moment.

Further to this, many people have had strange sightings that don’t really ‘make sense,’ in the realm of known aircrafts. The frequency of these sightings are not uncommon these days, especially for avid star gazers.

Haven’t seen one yourself? Well, how often are you looking up into the night sky? For many people, the answer is little to never.

Who Man’s These Craft’s?

The next question to be asked is, are these objects, or at least some of them, extraterrestrial?

According to one of the pilots who filmed the UFO released by the Pentagon, yes, they are, at least that’s their belief. The Pentagon’s “aerial defence” program director, Luis Elizondo also shared his belief that they are, along with hundreds of other high ranking personnel from several branches of military, intelligence, academia, aerospace and academia. He said that there is plenty of evidence to make that connection… The most recent example might be Robert Bigelow, founder of the Bigelow Aerospace corporation who, not long ago, stated that he knows we are being visited, and have been visited by ET’s.

“Yes there have been crashed craft, and bodies recovered. . . . We are not alone in the universe, they have been coming here for a long time. . . . I happen to be privileged enough to be in on the fact that we have been visited on this planet, and the UFO phenomenon is real.”

– Doctor Edgar Mitchell, sixth man to walk on the moon (source)(source)(source)

I elaborate on that discussion in a recent article, if you’re interested:

It’s Official, We Know That UFOs or “UAP” Are Real, So Are They Extraterrestrial or Not?

Quetzalcoatl

Ancient history is fascinating to say the least, and we’ve discovered so much about it. But, at the same time, we still know very little about Earth’s history and even the history of humanity. One of the most fascinating points to make about ancient history is that much of which was once considered mythological, is actually turning out to be true.

Perhaps information that didn’t fit within our framework of accepted knowledge was deemed mythological? How can we take seriously the writings of ancient Greek philosophers when describing social life and other aspects of humanity, yet when it comes to other areas of the world, like the Oracle at Delphi, they are placed in a the mythological realm?

cdn3.collective-evolution.com/assets/uploads/2018/02/quetz-300×196.jpg 300w, cdn2.collective-evolution.com/assets/uploads/2018/02/quetz-100×65.jpg 100w, cdn1.collective-evolution.com/assets/uploads/2018/02/quetz-260×170.jpg 260w” sizes=”(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px” />

Perhaps some was mythological, but perhaps some of what we call mythological was actually real.

Another great example is the Lost Land of Atlantis, a highly technologically advanced civilization that would shake what we thought we knew of human history, it’s not so much a tale anymore, and it’s one of many examples that show what we’ve been taught may not be completely correct.

For anybody who has done their research in this area, it’s quite clear given the evidence we now have, that Atlantis was far from a mythological place. Given our research on Atlantis, and many scholars out there, Atlantis is no joke, and perhaps before that, Lemuria as well.

This is why when it comes to stories of figures like Quetzalcoatl, it’s always interesting to contemplate that they were real.

The video footage mentioned above, which was released by the Pentagon, was done so in conjunction with To The Stars Academy headed by Tom Delonge, along with Luis Elizondo (mentioned earlier), and several other figures who’ve held high level positions within the Department of Defence. The Pentagon is working with the academy in the disclosure of UFO’s.

That in itself is a completely different discussion with many implications. It’s hard to trust the government these days, so can we really trust them with UFO disclosure and what that means? Will leave this for another time.

Delonge recently made some interesting comments about his experiences so far, and the contacts he’s been able to make, and the discussions that have been had.

Tom states in a Podcast with Joe Rogan:

“I went and met a former director of the CIA and NSA…Right when I sat down and told him about the book you know what he says to me? He goes, “I didn’t read much science fiction when I was a kid but I read a lot about Greek mythology”…The sixth biggest defense contractor in the world is a company called Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC)…and in the front of the building (SAIC’s headquarters) you have an obelisk coming out of a fake leg and two Atlantians on thrones, and they’re both holding pyramids and one says the past and one says the future, and they’re 8 foot tall statues.”

Interesting, isn’t it?

So, who was Quetzalcoatl? Considered to be a mythical tale, Spanish chronicler Juan de Torquemada states that Quetzalcoatl was ‘a fair and ruddy complexioned man with a long beard. Another describes him as follows:

“A mysterious person…a white man with strong formation of body, broad forehead, large eyes, and a flowing beard. He was dressed in a long, white robe reaching to his feet. He condemned sacrifices, except of fruits and flowers, and was known as the god of peace…When addressed on the subject of war he is reported to have stopped up his ears with his fingers.”  (source)

Graham Hancock, one of the world’s foremost researchers into such things, describes another description from Central American Mayan tradition in his book, Fingerprints of the Gods:

“He came from across the sea in a boat that moved by itself without paddles. He was a tall, bearded white man who taught people to use fire for cooking. He also built houses and showed couples that they could live together as husband and wife; and since people often quarrelled in those days, he taught them to live in peace.”

This figure is spoken of the Mesoamerican culture.

It’s interesting because there are multiple accounts of various figures, not just Quetzalcoatl, all of which seemed to have provided humanity with a little ‘push’, here and there, and assistance with regards to discovery. Nothing was really done for humanity, it seemed that the common theme through all of these contacts was for us to better ourselves, and be responsible for our own progression, with a little bit of assistance.

Not all of the ‘gods’ were kind, loving and peaceful. There were others who required sacrifices, and seemed to almost be a little opposite of ones like Quetzalcoatl.

What’s also interesting is that the descriptions of Quetzalcoatl resemble modern day descriptions of some, supposed extraterrestrial beings. Those who have examined the lore, like myself, would know this. Could these have been who we consider today, benevolent extraterrestrial beings? Perhaps.

Ancient history, along with many ancient cultures who pre-date modern-day religion, all have very interesting stories which can easily be interpreted has highly advanced beings from another place.

The idea that these are just mere interpretations seem to be dwindling every year. Being an avid researcher in the field for more than a decade, I can tell you that extraterrestrial intelligence is just the tip of the iceberg. It truly does open up Pandora’s box, and there is much more to this universal story, so much so that we probably couldn’t even comprehend it.

The evidence today points to the idea that we’ve been visited for a long time, so to contemplate the idea that these were extraterrestrial visits is not out of the question.

There are objects in our atmosphere which are technically miles in advance of anything we can deploy, that we have no means of stopping them coming here … [and] that there is a serious possibility that we are being visited and have been visited for many years by people from outer space, from other civilizations….Who they are, where they come from, and what they want. This should be the subject of rigorous scientific investigation and not the subject of ‘rubishing’ by tabloid newspapers.”

 – Lord Admiral Hill-Norton, former Chief of Defence Staff, 5 Star Admiral of the Royal Navy, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee (source)

If they have been here as well as visiting us for a long time, that’s good news. It takes out the idea of an ‘extraterrestrial invasion’, because, if that were the case, it would have already happened by now.

The meaning of Quetzalcoatl is “feathered serpent,” this is the translation that comes from ancient South America, from the Maya and the Aztecs. In Hancock’s book, he goes on to describe how there were other entities who resembled Quetzalcoatl  quite closely:

“There were other deities, among the Maya in particular, whose identities seemed to merge closely with those of Quetzalcoatl. One was Votan, a great civilizer, who was also described as pale-skinned, bearded and wearing a long robe. Sholars could offer no translation for his name but his principal symbol, like that of Quetzalcoatl, was a serpent. Another closely related figure was Itzamana, the Mayan god of healing, who was robed and bearded individual, his symbol, too, was the rattlesnake.”

Graham, in his book, goes on to state:

“All of the legends stated unambiguously that Quetzalcoatl/Kukulkan/Gucumatz/Votan/Itzamana had arrived in Central America from some-where very far away (across the “Eastern Sea”)  and that amid great sadness he had eventually sailed off again in the direction whence he had come.”

This is an interested quote, and relates closely to a sentiment shared by a First Nations Canadian storyteller, Richard Wagamese:

“My people tell of Star People who came to us many generations ago. The Star people brought spiritual teachings and stories and maps of the cosmos and they offered these freely. They were kind, loving and set a great example. When they left us, my people say there was a loneliness like no other.” (source)

Interesting to think about. These are versions of history that old more plausibility to them than the ones we currently consider concrete. As we continue to move forward exponentially, perhaps our destiny is in the stars and we ourselves one day will be the extraterrestrials, or perhaps we already are.

thumbnail Another Vaccine Has Been Added To Australia’s National Immunization Program

Feb 11th 2018, 12:40, by Helen Lobato

Once again we risk our natural acquired immunity as we introduce another vaccine to young babies.

On February 2, the Australian government announced that the new meningococcal vaccine (Nimenrix) which covers A, C, W and Y strains (MenACWY)  will be added to the National Immunization Program ahead of the next peak meningococcal season. This addition of yet another vaccine to Australia’s increasingly busy vaccination schedule reinforces the Australian government’s non-negotiable commitment to the vaccination of all Australian children.

What is meningococcal disease?

Meningococcal disease is a very scary disease that can cause death within hours if not recognized and treated in time by antibiotic therapy. It is caused by a number of different strains of the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis most commonly by the serogroups A, B, C, W and Y.

There are two different forms of the disease: Meningitis which is inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord, and Septicaemia, a serious bloodstream infection. Although it is a serious disease, it is rare. The number of cases of meningococcal disease in Australia in 2016 were 252. Of those who suffer invasive meningococcal disease up to one in 10 die and among those who survive 20% will have permanent disabilities which include loss of limbs, sight and hearing problems and severe brain damage. The mainstream media is renown for treating the fearful public with stories of toddlers struck down with the ‘deadly disease’ told by understandably emotional parents anxious to raise awareness and who urge the government to act and put the meningococcal vaccine on the immunization schedule.

The parents of a Tasmanian toddler who recently contracted the deadly meningococcal W disease are sickened their son could have been immunized but they did not realize a vaccination existed.

How is meningococcal disease spread?

The bacterium Neisseria meningitidis is spread through coughing, sneezing or close contact with infected people.

Who is at risk of this disease?

The highest incidence of meningococcal disease occurs in children less than 5 years and adolescents aged 15–19 years. Other risk factors include genetic factors, smoking, living in crowded conditions such as the military and prisons, a recent respiratory illness, alcohol use and underlying chronic medical conditions such as immune deficiency.

Symptoms include headache, rash, fever ,vomiting, stiff neck , extreme fatigue, convulsions and  irritability.

Discussion

Meningococcal disease is an awful disease but does it warrant another vaccine added to the already aggressive vaccination programBy the time a child is five, s/he will have received a total of 44 vaccine doses. This rises to 49 vaccine doses when the recommended yearly influenza vaccines are included.

Most of us are not at risk for the majority of us have natural acquired immunity to this organism. According to Barbara Loe Fisher of the National Vaccination Information Center

At any given time, about 20 to 40 percent of Americans are asymptomatically colonizing meningococcal organisms in their nasal passages and throats, which throughout life boosts innate immunity to invasive meningococcal infection. Mothers, who have innate immunity, transfer maternal antibodies to their newborns to protect them in the first few months of life until babies can make their own antibodies. By the time American children enter adolescence, the vast majority have asymptomatically developed immunity that protects them.

Humans have been in contact with meningococcal bacteria for thousands of years. It is rare that they cause illness. But there is no discussion about the need for this new vaccine. Stories about the latest victim to the disease are distributed widely followed by empathetic voices who call for a new vaccine to prevent any future deaths.

The meningococcal vaccine should be available for anyone who wants to use it but it should not be compulsory. However whenever a vaccine is added to the schedule it becomes compulsory in order to access financial benefits, and admittance to childcare and pre-school, as is already the case for childhood vaccinations in Australia.

There must be other ways to find those who are more vulnerable to the disease such as those who smoke and others who are under nourished and attempts made to mitigate the risks that they face from the disease.

According to Barbara Loe Fisher from the National Vaccine Information Centre. Meningococcal vaccines have been found to be at best only about 58% effective within 2-5 years after the adolescent had got the shot.

So what this means is that boosters will be given if vaccine immunity is to be maintained. Or we could go back to naturally acquired immunity which lasts a lifetime.

As more vaccines are rapidly added to the vaccination schedule what is happening to natural immunity? In Vaccination Illusion: How vaccination compromises our natural immunity and what we can do to regain our health, Tetyana Obukhanych, Ph.D. discusses how

Vaccination does not lead to permanent immunity

She explains how before the practice of vaccination:

Infants were protected from these diseases by maternal immunity, whereas adults were protected by their own life-long immunity, which they had acquired in the childhood. The use of vaccines changed this

Today, mothers who are vaccinated are unable to pass valuable protective antibodies on to their babies. Take the case of the MMR vaccine which has been available since the 1960s. Prior to this time, babies had maternal protection from measles via their unvaccinated mothers. They were protected from such infectious diseases by the maternal influence until they were older and able to cope with a case of the wild measles which would give them life long immunity. This sadly is no longer the case and new young mothers who were vaccinated with the MMR and everything else on the schedule are unable to pass on natural immunity.

The situation is grave and benefits no-one but those who profit from the vaccine industry. Vaccination has only been around for over 200 years. It is time to admit the mistake that it is.

thumbnail Why Veganism In The U.S. Has Grown By 600% In The Past 3 Years

Feb 11th 2018, 12:29, by Alanna Ketler

Being vegan, or if you prefer to not have the label but following a plant-based diet – is no longer taboo or a laughing matter.

The results are in and more and more people across the globe are choosing an animal free diet. In the U.S. alone, veganism has risen by 600% since 2014. Why this has happened can be attributed to a number of different reasons.

An increased awareness towards the atrocities that are taking place on factory farms.
Compassion towards animals.
A drive for increased personal health and wellness.
A growing concern towards the environmental destruction caused by meat eating.
A shift in consciousness within ourselves that leads to greater connection to the body, earth and animals.

One thing is for sure, as we shift and our awareness continues to grow, people are taking responsibility and making big changes in their lives.

According to the video below:

Veganism in the U.S. has increased by 600% in the past three years alone. Six percent of Americans identified as vegans in 2017, compared to only one percent in 2014. Non-dairy milk sales have also increased by 61% since 2012, which is causing traditional cow milk sales to decrease. According to data released by GrubHub, people chose vegan food 195% more in the first half of 2017 than the year before.

The trend is spreading globally too, people identifying as ‘vegans’ increased 350% in the UK, compared to a decade ago. Vegetarianism rose by 400% in the last 10 years in Portugal. In HongKong, 22% of people are practicing a plant-based diet. In China, even the government is getting on the plant-based train, by encouraging people to cut their meat consumption in half. Researchers think China’s plant-based market will grow more than 17% by 2020. Based on these numbers, it’s clear that more and more people are shifting toward plant-based diets”

I wrote another article a few months ago about how adopting a plant-based diet was set to become the next mega trend in 2018 – you can read more about that here. But, it seems as though this is not simply a “trend” as these numbers are only growing as more and more people are starting to see for themselves just how simple, cost-effective, and delicious a plant-based diet can be.

Does It Have To Be All-Or-Nothing?

While choosing to eat a plant-based diet is a great decision for many reasons, people often feel as though this is an all-or-nothing approach to diet, but really it doesn’t have to be this way. The options aren’t, planet-based or nothing. There are many things you can do that will have an impact on your health, the environment, and animal welfare. While it’s best to go straight plant-based, for many reasons, start small might be the right choice for some people.

Adopting a Reducetarian type of diet can be a huge step in the right direction and a great way to ease into a more plant-based way of living. By drastically cutting back your intake of animals and animal products you are still making a huge impact. Doing so allows you to get a feel for all of the delicious foods that can be made animal free and you can afford to choose more ethical choices for when you do decide to consume meat or animal products.

By keeping an open mind and considering that consuming less is still better than not trying at all, we can all do our part to take responsibility for our actions and take an active role in creating the type of world that we want to live in. By doing this, no doubt it will affect the lives of those around you and they too might become curious about what it means to simply eat less meat, or consume more plants.

Eating a more ethical and responsible diet doesn’t have to be about the label, we don’t need to identify with a label, another article I wrote talked about how some aggressive vegans are turning people off from even considering a change in lifestyle, in that case, is doing more harm than good. Let’s all have compassion towards one another and where everyone is at in terms of their dietary preferences, chances are many of these “hardcore vegans” were once bacon loving big mac eaters as well. By simply raising awareness instead of preaching, judging, and getting defensive, people will be more inclined to at least consider this as an option.

Either way, these numbers are growing and it’s incredible to see! The first step towards change is by raising awareness and this is one aspect of our world that is definitely changing. Woo hoo! This is a reason to celebrate.

thumbnail 7 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About The Lost City Of Atlantis

Feb 10th 2018, 16:16, by Alanna Ketler

Atlantis, the intriguing mystery that leaves many of us curious to learn more, and some of us skeptical and dismissive. What is it about this lost city that leaves so many of us questioning much of what we have been taught to believe? Is there some truth to the story of Atlantis that we inherently know, deep down inside that is true? Are we connected in some way to this mythical place from, perhaps our past lives?

These questions are fun to ponder, but we are unlikely to get any definite answers, at least not yet.

First, Some History

How much do you know about Atlantis? Where does this story even come from? From what we do know, the first known documentation of the story of Atlantis came from the Greek philosopher, Plato in two of his writings, Timaeus and Critias, both these books date back to about 360 BC. Within these books, Plato wrote that the Greek sage, Solon was given the story of Atlantis in Egypt by a priest and upon his arrival back to Greece, he shared the story with his relative, Dropides who passed it down to his son Critias, who then passed it down to his grandson – also names Critias, who then finally shared it with the well-known Greek philosopher, Socrates.

So, given the above information, you can see that this was a story that was told, and passed down through many generations, therefore it should not be taken as fact. Despite of this, for some reason many of us feel a strong connection to the story of Atlantis and believe it to be true.

In the report, author M. Pierre Termeir, a member of the Academy of Sciences and Director of Service of the Geologic Chart of France, gives a lecture regarding the Atlantean civilization.  He makes a compelling case for further study of this lost city:

After a long period of disdainful indifference, observe how in the last few years science is returning to the study of Atlantis. How many naturalists, geologists, zoologists, or botanists are asking one another today whether Plato has not transmitted to us, with slight amplification, a page from the actual history of mankind. No affirmation is yet permissible; but it seems more and more evident that a vast region, continental  or made up of great islands, has collapsed west of the Pillars of Hercules, otherwise called the Straight of Gibraltar, and that its collapse occurred in the not far distant past. In any event, the question of Atlantis is placed anew before men of science; and since I do not believe that it can ever be solved without the aid of oceanography, I have thought it natural to discuss it here, in this temple of maritime science, and to call to such a problem, long scorned but now being revived, the attention of oceanographers, as well as the attention of those who, though immersed in the tumult of cities, lend an ear to the distant murmur of the sea.

You can read this full report here, starting on page 219.

Regardless of how you feel about the lost city of Atlantis, here are 7 things you probably didn’t know…

1. We Know The Supposed Location

In Plato’s writings, he tells us exactly where the lost city lies, his text reads, “came forth out of the Atlantic Ocean… there was an island situated in front of the straits which are by you [in reference to the ancient Greeks], called the Pillars of Heracles.” Today, these are known as the Straits of Gibraltar, the area between Spain and Africa.

In 2011, archaeologist from the University of Hartford, Richard Freund and his team found cities that were built in the image of Atlantis known as “memorial cities.” They were found in the swamps of Doana National Park, which is just North of Cadiz Spain. Interestingly Cadiz sits right outside of the straights, which has Freund convinced that the real Atlantis was buried in the mud flats of the Atlantic. This matches the part of Plato’s story that says, “the sea in those parts is impassable and impentrable, because there is a shoal of mud in the way; and this was caused by the subsidence of the island.

2. The City Of Atlantis Was Named After A Demigod

Despite the fact that Atlantis is apparently in the Atlantic ocean, that’s not where it got it’s name. According to the texts, Poseidon – the Greek god of the sea – had five pairs of male twins with an Atlantean woman, named Cleito. Poseidon gave each of his 10 sons a different portion of the island to rule. His first-born Atlas had the entire island and the surrounding ocean named after him.

3. We Are Missing Half The Story

While we have a complete version of Timaeus, we do not have the completed copy of Critias. In this story we have up until Zeus, head of all Greek gods. “Collected all the gods into their most holy habitation, which, being placed in the center of the world, beholds all created things. And when he had called them together, he spake as follows” and that’s where it ends, talk about leaving you on the edge of your seat! Who knows, maybe this next portion of the book was deliberately left out…  it is not known whether Plato did this on purpose or if we just never were able to find the completed version. There is also a belief that Plato either wrote or had planned on writing a third book about Atlantis called Hermocrates.

4. If Atlantis Were Real, It Would Be At Least 11,500 Years Old

As the text goes, the story of Atlantis was handed to Solon in Egypt after he wanted to draw one of the priests to speak about their oldest of tales. In order to do this, Solon told the priests of the oldest Greek story what he could recall and spoke to them about the great flood and the first man. One priest responded, “O Solon, Solon… there is not an old man among you… in mind you are all young; there is no old opinion handed down among you by ancient tradition.

The priest continued to say that the home city of Solon, Athens was actually much older than he thought it was.

5. Plato Believed The Story To Be True

Even though, aside from hearsay, this story doesn’t really have any solid legs to stand on in terms of physical evidence, Critias claims that this story is in fact, true, “Then listen… to a tale which, though is strange, is certainly true, having been attested by Solon.” To which Socrates responds, “Very good, and what is this ancient famous action of the Athenians, which Critias declared, on the authority of Solon, to be not a mere legend, but an actual fact?

6. Atlantis Was An Empire

In the story told by Plato, he tells us that Atlantis was an empire, “Now in this island of Atlantis, there was a great and wonderful empire which had rule over the whole island and several others, and over parts of the continent, and, furthermore, the men of Atlantis had subjected the parts of Libya within the columns of Heracles as far as Egypt, and of Europe as far as

Tyrrhenia is another name for Eturia, which is now simply known as Central Italy.

7. Atlantis Represents Just One Of Many Times Mankind Has Been & Will Be Destroyed

The Egyptian priest told Solon that none of his stories were actually “truly ancient” compared to his own. He claimed that the reason that Solon lacked true ancient knowledge is because mankind has been destroyed time and time again.

“There have been, and will be again, many destructions of mankind arising out of many causes; the greatest have been brought about the agencies of fire and water, and other lesser ones by innumerable other causes. When, on the other hand, the gods purge the Earth with a deluge of water, the survivors in your country are herdsmen and  shepherds who dwell on the mountains.

There are many philosophers and spiritual teachers that believe that humankind has been wiped out before and will be wiped out again. Some believe this for a simple reason of science and or natural disasters, others believe this is sort of like a cleansing process for us to start again if we have headed on a path of destruction. I mean think about it, the way we are heading now, in regards to how we are treating our environment, there is a chance that we could wipe ourselves out yet again, unless we learn from our mistakes and change our ways.

What do you think about Atlantis? Do you recall a past life there? Do you feel a strong connection to this mythical place? Let us know in the Collective Evolution Group, and join the discussion!

thumbnail Studies Show What Happens To Your Mouth When You Practice “Oil Pulling”

Feb 10th 2018, 14:37, by Arjun Walia

How many times have you come across a ‘natural’ or alternative health treatment, and, when you try to tell somebody about it, they completely dismiss the idea that it actually works? This is a problem in today’s society, the ‘natural’ label is seen in the realm of alternative treatment, and what’s solely emphasized today is the need and use for chemical medication. Prior to chemical medication, alternative treatment wasn’t seen as alternative, it just was. Interventions that don’t require medication are often shoved aside despite the fact that many of them show extreme promise and in some cases, the science is just as strong, if not more, than the chemical alternative without the harm that commonly comes as a trade-off.

This is the case with oil pulling, you’ll see countless amounts of articles written on the internet brushing oil pulling off as a hoax, or an ancient belief that simply doesn’t work. One thing is for certain, the writers of all these articles haven’t really taken the time to examine the science and legitimacy behind such a practice.

There is extreme legitimacy, in some cases, when it comes to alternative treatment, this is exactly why more and more people every single year gravitate towards these options.

A study published in 2012 outlines how, “the interest in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has increased during the past decade and the attitude of general public is mainly positive, but the debate about the clinical effectiveness of these therapies remains controversial among many medical professionals.”

It goes on to outline how the same resources that are poured into modern-day medicine, are not poured into alternative medicine, and, if they were, we’d know and learn a lot more about it. The lack of education is precisely why many medical professionals stay away from it and remain ignorant to some real solutions which exist.

There is no money in alternative medicine. Medicine today is completely dominated by big pharmaceutical companies, whose sole purpose seems to be profit over health.

So, what is oil pulling? A meta-analysis published in the Journal Traditional Complementary Medicine stats as follows,

“Oil pulling is a traditional folk remedy practiced in ancient India. It is believed to cure more than thirty systemic diseases when practiced regularly and as directed. Due to occurrence of side effects of modern medicines and oral hygiene products, people are increasingly attracted towards complementary and traditional practices. Oil pulling in addition to offering several oral health benefits also has beneficial effects on overall health.”

We have so much to learn from our ancients, and this is clear across many fields, from health, all the way to neuroscience and quantum physics. It’s truly amazing how many ancient cultures possessed the knowledge that they did, some of which we are just discovering now (or re-discovering).

Ancient eastern medicine considered the mouth as a mirror to the overall health of our body, and that our mouth, teeth and tongue were all connected to various organs throughout the body (heart, kidney’s, lungs, small intestine, spine etc.) Today, we know that our oral cavities contain billions of microorganisms that contribute to the development of several diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and more.

“The oral cavity contains some of the most varied and vast flora in the entire human body and is the main entrance for two systems vital to human function and physiology, the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. Several diseases involve these two systems and manifest in the oral cavity. In addition, a specific pathologic condition, such as periodontitis (ie, inflammation of the periodontal attachment of the teeth and the alveolar bone), may be present in the oral cavity. These specific conditions in the oral cavity may create foci of infection that can affect many other vital systems such as the cardiovascular and rental systems.”

How To Do It & What It Does

So, how do you do it? Organic oils like sesame oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil, cold pressed, are the best options. It’s best to do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach when you wake up, and a teaspoon of oil works best. You want to hold it in your mouth and swish it around occasionally for at least 10 minutes preferably 20. As the meta-analysis points out, it’s vital not to swallow any of it, as it will be loaded with toxins that are being pulled from inside your blood stream as well as your mouth.

“Oil pulling is believed to help in the excretion of toxic heavy metals by saliva. Oil pulling activates salivary enzymes which absorb toxins such as chemical toxins, bacterial toxins and environmental toxins from the blood and removed from the body through the tongue. Thus oil pulling detoxifies and purifies the entire human body.”

The meta-analysis goes on to explain how oil pulling generates antioxidants that actually damage the cell wall of microorganisms and kill them. These are the organisms that lead to the decay of the mouth, build up of plaque and several other factors mentioned briefly above.

“These oils will attract the lipid layer of bacterial cell membranes, and cause it to stick or get attracted, and pulled to the oil. During oil pulling, the oil gets emulsified and surface area of the oil gets increased….This oil will coat the teeth and gingiva and inhibits bacterial co-aggregration and plaque formation…Thus plaque building bacteria responsible for dental caries, gingivitis, periodontitis and bad breath are removed from the oral cavity. Gums become pink, healthier, and problem of bleeding gums is solved.

Each oil has benefits, for example, it explains how coconut oil has high amounts of lauric acid which reacts with components in our saliva that really makes it an ideal cleansing option.

It’s recommended, to receive the full benefits, to practice this on an empty stomach three times a day, if possible. If not, it’s best to do it right when you wake up, as mentioned above, as well as before bed a few hours after you’ve had dinner. When finished pulling, you want to rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth to clean the remainder of the oil off.

Brushing without toothpaste, or simply using your finger to clean and rub the oil that may remain around your teeth is a good idea. Compared to mouthwash, oil pulling is a no-brainer. Mouthwash brands, most of them anyway, contain fluoride which is a known neurotoxin. The meta-analysis points out how, “Chronic use of mouthwashes containing phenols and stannous fluoride produces staining.”

The meta analysis is great, and references dozens of studies on oil pulling and how effective it is on oral hygiene.  It is no doubt confirmed in scientific literature that it does have benefits, this much is clear, and emphasized by so many studies.

thumbnail How To Spot A Lie In 5 Seconds, Former CIA Officer Teaches You How

Feb 10th 2018, 14:29, by Joe Martino

Intuition. This is the first thing that comes to mind when I think about how we can effectively spot lies. Some of us call it a gut feeling, while others call it straight up intuition.

Humans, like a lie detector test, have a field of energy that stems from the heart. It is a magnetic field that radiates several metres off of a person and it can be detected by other people’s hearts and minds. This magnetic field contains information, and the heart is incredibly intelligent.

The work The HeartMath Institute is doing has made that evidently clear through their scientific research of the heart, it’s magnetic field and the inherent intelligence that exists in each persons heart.

The way I have always described it is, spotting a lie is a feeling. And I know in some way we have all felt this before. We may not have attributed it to our hearts or our heart’s intelligence, perhaps at times it was physical cues that gave it away, but I’m certain that each of us have known a lie was being told to them simply based off a feeling.

This is your intuition. Like it or not, it exists and we all have it. Truthfully, we can develop that intuition to assist us a great deal in life.

CIA Officer Reveals How To Spot A Lie

Former CIA officer Susan Carnicero — believes that humans lie about 10 times per day on average. Susan has spent more than 20 years interrogating, interviewing and polygraphing suspects, over the span of her career, and thus has learned a great deal on how to spot a liar. What she will teach goes back to the mental and analytical side of spotting a liar, but nonetheless this can be an important tool. She tells all in the video below.

Before jumping into this however, note that spotting a liar isn’t an exact science. Just because you see a friend doing something you will learn about below, may not mean they’re lying.

When it comes down to it, there are a wide range of lies. Some lies are meant to spare someone’s feelings or avoid hurting them, while others are more of an aggressive lie to protect oneself or deceive another for personal benefit. So of course, there are times when it is much more important to be able to spot a lie than others.

When it comes to intuition, I tend to feel that the heart is so intelligent that if it is more of a playful lie to say surprise you for a party or something of that nature, you might be less aware of what is going on than when your intuition is really trying to get you to see something important. But this is truly my own experience, not a science.

Nonverbal Signs Of Deceit

Grooming gestures – This one is quite common. If a person is straightening a tie or piece of clothing, fixing hair, adjusting or fiddling with something else on their body like a watch or glasses, this can be a subconscious way people are trying to hide their anxiety about a question.

Verbal/nonverbal disconnect – Have you ever seen someone nod their head yes but say no when being asked a question? Then fumble over their words trying to correct it? This can be a sign of a deceptive behaviour as well.

Behavioural pause – Let’s say you asked a person something vague like what they might have been doing 5 years ago in September. The person may pause, think for a moment and try to figure it out as it’s not an easy thing to remember. However, if you had said, “did you murder someone 5 years ago in September?” And a pause occurred, that might indicate a sign of deceit as it should be a very easy question to answer.

Hand-to-face movements – If you notice a person raise their hand to their mouth, or face, lick their lips, pull on their ear or adjust their hair, this can be another sign of deceptive behaviour.

In the video below, Susan reveals more than just nonverbal signs, she also discusses further vocal cues that can tell a lot about what a persons intentions are.

thumbnail What Happens To Our Brain When We Experience Complete Silence & Peace of Mind

Feb 9th 2018, 18:48, by Alanna Ketler

Silence. How often do you truly get to experience this? Nowadays, silence is a very rare commodity indeed as we are constantly bombarded with noises from people, traffic, airplanes, music, advertisements, construction and the list goes on. I’ve been thinking a lot about silence and how much I would like some as I’ve been travelling and am constantly subjected to honking cars, screaming tourists, and clanking sounds all around me. Silence, is actually not something that is very easily obtainable -silence is golden. So how important is silence and is it a detriment to the well-being of our minds if we don’t have it?

In 2011, the Finnish Tourist Board ran a campaign that actually used silence as a marketing product. Their campaign aimed to entice people to visit Finland to experience the beauty of the silent land. The campaign released a series of photos of single figures in nature along with the headline, “Silence, Please.” Another tagline was added by Simon Ahnolt, an international country branding consultant that said, “No talking, but action.”

Finland is onto something here. In their campaign we are seeing the beginning of using silence as a marketing technique as it is something that is becoming more and more attractive as it is becoming more and more rare. Really, think about it, how often are you in complete silence? Noise pollution is something we deal with every single day and often, we don’t think twice about it. Scientific studies are now showing that silence is much more important for our brains than you might think.

Science For Silence

A study published in 2013 in the journal, Brain, Structure and Function, used various types of noise and silence and monitored the effect the sound and silence had on the brains of mice. The silence was intended to be the control in the study, but what they found was surprising. The scientists discovered that when the mice were exposed to two hours of complete silence per day they actually developed new brain cells in the hippocampus, which is the region of the brain that is associated with memory, emotion and learning new things.

The growth of new brain cells doesn’t always mean improved health benefits, but in this instance one of the researchers, Imke Kirste, says that these new cells appeared to become functioning neurons.

“We saw that silence is really helping the new generated cells to differentiate into neurons and integrate into the system.”

So, basically this means that silence can actually grow your brain.

Another study from 2001 defined a “default mode” of brain function that showed that even when the brain was perceivably resting, it was still perpetually active and internalizing and evaluating information. Follow up research found that this default mode is also used in the process of self-reflection. In 2013, in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, Joseph Moran et al. wrote that the brain’s default mode network “is observed most closely during the psychological task of reflecting on one’s personalities and characteristics (self-reflection), rather than during self-recognition, thinking of the self-concept, or thinking about self-esteem, for example.”

When the brain is in a resting state it is able to integrate internal and external information into “a conscious work space,” according to Moran and colleagues.

In other words, when the mind is not distracted by noise or goal oriented tasks there lies a quiet space that allows your conscious work space to process things in a different manner. In these periods of silence your brain has the freedom that it needs to realize it’s place in your internal as well as external world.

As Herman Melville once wrote,

“All profound things and emotions of things are preceded and attended by silence.”

Silence Has The Opposite Effect On The Brain As Noise

Noise, at pretty much any levels cause stress and tension to the body, silence releases tension in the brain and body. A study published in the journal, Heart – discovered that just two minutes of silence can prove to be even more relaxing than listening to “relaxing” music, go figure.

The effect of noise pollution on our ability to perform a cognitive task has been studied extensively. Noise can interfere with task performance at work and school and can also be the cause for a decrease in motivation and an increase in the making of errors. Cognitive functions that are most commonly affected by noise are reading attention, memory and problem solving. You may be able to relate to this if you’ve ever tried to read or study and another person is blaring music or watching T.V. close to you, it’s almost impossible to concentrate.

Interestingly, a number of studies have also shown that children that live in houses or go to schools which are near airports or under airplane flight paths, railways, or highways have lower reading scores and are slower in their cognitive and language skills.

Luckily, This Can Be Resolved

The human body is a truly remarkable thing, and the brain – well, this is beyond comprehension. In other words, it is beyond the brain to fully understand the brain, how about that? It is possible for the brain to restore its finite cognitive resources and according to the attention restoration theory, when you are in an environment with lower levels of sensory input the brain can actually recover some of it’s cognitive abilities. When exposed to silence the brain can let down it’s heightened sensory guard and restore some of what has been lost through exposure to excess noise.

If traveling to Finland is out of your reach, don’t worry, there are many other ways to find silence. If you live in a city it might be more of a mission, but it is always possible. The sounds of nature don’t really count as noise pollution, so if you can go for a walk through a forest, or a quiet park or sit by the beach, maybe even try out a sensory deprivation tank – you can experience the benefits that come from experiencing silence. We all need it, but it’s so easy to forget about it in our buys, go, go, go type of world we’ve created. Luckily from awareness comes change, and we can choose to make time to do what’s best for our mind, body and soul.
