Klimaatovereenkomst van Parijs: een wassen neus

Jun 30th 2018, 06:00, by Hans Labohm (Hoofdredacteur)

In […]

Klimaatdictatuur

Jun 29th 2018, 06:00, by Jeroen Hetzler

Jun 26th 2018, 06:00, by Hans Labohm (Hoofdredacteur)

Kleine IJstijd. Onderzoek van Michael Mann e.a. weerlegd door gletsjers en nieuwe chronologie. Een gastbijdrage van Henk Feikema. Het klimaat staat tegenwoordig volop in de belangstelling. Tulpenmanie

Jun 25th 2018, 06:00, by Jeroen Hetzler

Een bijdrage van Jeroen Hetzler. In de 17e eeuw mochten wij de tulpenmanie beleven. Zie hier. […]

A German Festival Removes a Rap Group for Refusing to Tone Down Their Anti-Israeli Politics

Jun 29th 2018, 22:54, by malterwitty

Young Fathers were asked to distance themselves from BDS, and upon their refusal, were promptly removed from the concert.

Many have been outraged by Ruhrtirennale’s decision, calling it an injustice to demand a group sheathe their political and social beliefs if they want to perform at the festival.

Ruhrtirennale’s actions are even more perplexing given their admission that they do not find BDS to be anti-Semitic in their cause, leading many to wonder why they are so adamantly against it.

In response to their removal, Young Fathers released a statement to Artists for Palestine UK, expressing their disappointment in the festival’s actions, calling it unfair and unjust to be asked to distance themselves from their human principles in order to perform.

Prosecute Blair govt officials at ICC after torture report – ex-diplomat Craig Murray (VIDEO)

Jun 29th 2018, 17:34, by ladylove

Craig Murray, the only British civil servant to express written concerns over UK complicity in torture and rendition, has told RT that former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw should face the International Criminal Court.
Murray was the British ambassador to Uzbekistan when he noted that MI6 operatives were receiving intelligence from the “torture chambers of the Uzbek regime,” later expressing written concerns back to the Foreign Office and “to Jack Straw personally,” only to be told that “in the War on Terror, the decision was that we would accept intelligence from torture.”

“I subsequently became aware that in fact the Americans were also shipping people into Uzbekistan specifically in order for them to be tortured under the extraordinary rendition system,” said Murray.

Daisy Luther: Is The Media Deliberately Trying To Spawn Civil War 2.0?

Jun 29th 2018, 17:01, by ladylove

Everyone is talking about a looming civil war on American soil, but they’re all blaming the “other” side. The media is deliberately trying to stir things up with breathless headlines about how awful the “other” side is. And it’s working so well it could lead us right to Civil War 2.0.

The fact is, both the Left and the Right are to blame, threatening those who don’t have the same worldview. What it’s essential for us to keep in mind is that these are the opinions of the extremes of both sides. We in America have had conservative and liberal points of view along with everything in between for decades without the constant, looming threat of violence.

Here are some examples.
For example, Wendy Wolfe Herd, CEO of the dating app Bumble and a member of Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30, was the victim of a cyber attack launched by a “neo-Nazi organization” that posted Herd’s personal details online, as well as the contact information of her staff.

The cyber attack occurred a couple of weeks after the Charlottesville rally last August, in which a man was with charged with a federal hate crime after driving into the crowd of counter-protesters. Herd released a statement saying that her company was “joining forces to ban all forms of hate from Bumble including racism, hate speech, and bigotry.” She believes this is why she and her employees were targeted. Herd now travels with bodyguards.

At the same time, the Far Left is also stirring the pot and threatening dissenters with violence. Some guy named Hamilton Nolan recently posted an article on the “progressive” website Splinter that seemed to have referenced the politically-motivated bombings that took place during Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford’s administrations in response to the Vietnam War. While some of his points about the warmongers in Congress are legitimate, he goes way, wayyyy off into the ether in his calls to action.

Brandon Smith: "Trade War Provides Perfect Cover For The Elitist Engineered Global Reset"

Jun 29th 2018, 16:57, by ladylove

Over the past several months, I have been examining the underlying or hidden motivations behind the currently expanding global trade war, including the impressive level of cognitive dissonance surrounding the issue.

Now that acceptance of the trade war as a reality is setting in, the Trump bandwagon is doubling down and embracing blind enthusiasm for what they assume will be a victorious outcome, no matter how long it takes. Though the team-geopolitics mentality is enticing in some ways, I don’t find much in the facts and evidence department to support the notion of America winning a global trade war.

As I outlined in my article America’s Debt Dependence Makes It An Easy Economic Target, as long as the U.S. retains historic levels of debt on a government, corporate and consumer level, and as long as we remain addicted to foreign investment in that debt, trade war opponents have all the ammunition they need.

Military Seizes Control Of Water Supplies As Venezuelan Infrastructure Collapses

Jun 29th 2018, 16:54, by ladylove

If there’s one group that has benefited from Venezuela’s economic collapse, it’s the country’s military, which has been handed control over much of the country’s remaining industry as the collapse has intensified. Venezuela’s army, about 160,000 strong, controls the mineral-rich Arco Minero del Orinoco, and some of its top officers are also serving as executives of Venezuela’s state-run oil company.

And as the collapse of social services has caused water supplies to dwindle, the military has recently hijacked what spigots remain, transforming access to water into a luxury that most Venezuelans can’t afford. Many of the pipes and reservoirs have fallen into disarray – or seen their supplies drastically diminished – the military is stepping in to take charge of the “equitable distribution” of what little remains. As part of the government’s socialist policy program, the cost of water is supposed to be subsidized – at least in theory. But with the state-owned water utility, known as Hidrocapital, has effectively abdicated its responsibilities, the military is increasingly stepping in, commandeering trucks and vans used by private individuals who have tried to step in and service parts of the capital, according to a Bloomberg report.

Trump Rapidly Expands Cold War-Era Footprint In Europe To Counter Russia

Jun 29th 2018, 16:46, by ladylove

Does ‘America first’ really mean ‘Europe first’ in the preparation for war with Russia?

At the expense of the American taxpayer, the Trump administration wants to restore the Cold War-era footprint in Europethrough massive investments in military infrastructure to deter Russian aggression and reinforce allies.

It is odd that the administration wants to spend massive amounts of money on infrastructure projects in Europe, but has yet to fix America’s crippling D- infrastructure. Somehow, the priorities of this administration of ‘America first’ have been lost through the alignment with the military-industrial-complex and Washington’s warmongers.

The Trump administration asked for $828 million in 2019 to expand and upgrade military infrastructure projects throughout Europe as part of a continuous fearmongering campaign against Russia to allocate more money to defense. Nearly half of that construction funding would go towards U.S. Air Force projects.

The request for additional funding would more than double the military’s infrastructure projects under the European Deterrence Initiative (EDI), from the 2018 request, when just a few years ago, the Pentagon was scaling back its Cold War-era footprint in Europe.

Global Stock Rally Halted By Report Trump May Withdraw From WTO

Jun 29th 2018, 16:42, by ladylove

On the last day of a volatile, tumultuous quarter European stocks rebounded sharply following a broad-based rally in Asia on hopes for an upbeat end to the week and quarter, with risk on sentiment further unleashed by an early morning (“vaguely worded”) European deal on migration which sent the Euro and 10Y Italian bonds surging. Indeed, it was nothing but green across global markets this morning:

However, the sense of precarious peace was shattered shortly after 6am ET when Axios reported that after several days of calm, President Trump has repeatedly told his advisers he seeks to withdraw the US from the WTO – a decision that would “throw global trade into wild disarray.”

Accused Mass-Murderer Jarrod Ramos Had Several Twitter Accounts- They’ve Suspended Them All, But Missed This One.

Jun 29th 2018, 16:40, by dissident84

The day that Ramos created the account, 10/23/14, was the same day that the judge ordered him to remove his other Twitter account, to stop threatening members of the Maryland judiciary, and that he is forbidden from posting information about several specific people. The judge also ordered that Ramos “Shall receive a mental health evaluation, involuntarily.” That order expired on October 2, 2015, and that is the day that Ramos posted a copy of the 4-page order. The order appears to be a response to a legal filing in which Ramos was actually the plaintiff, in which he was seeking a restraining order against two people. The woman in this court document is presumably the one who Ramos had been stalking on Facebook, to which he had previously pled guilty to harassment of her.

Don’t Tell Trump, But The Atlanta & St.Louis Feds Just Slashed Q2 GDP

Jun 29th 2018, 16:34, by ladylove

Just two days after Donald Trump Jr slammed “the experts” and crowed of expectations for a 4.5% Q2 GDP print, The Atlanta Fed took an ax to its forecast this morning following disappointing spending data…

The GDPNow model estimate for real GDP growth (seasonally adjusted annual rate) in the second quarter of 2018 is 3.8 percent on June 29, down from 4.5 percent on June 27. The nowcast of second-quarter real personal consumption expenditures growth declined from 3.7 percent to 2.7 percent after this morning’s personal income and outlays report from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

How Long Can the Federal Reserve Stave Off the Inevitable?

Jun 29th 2018, 16:26, by ladylove

When are America’s global corporations and Wall Street going to sit down with President Trump and explain to him that his trade war is not with China but with them. The biggest chunk of America’s trade deficit with China is the offshored production of America’s global corporations. When the corporations bring the products that they produce in China to the US consumer market, the products are classified as imports from China.

In other words, to put it in the most simple and clear terms, millions of Americans lost their middle class jobs not because China played unfairly, but because American corporations betrayed the American people and exported their jobs. “Making America great again” means dealing with these corporations, not with China. When Trump learns this, assuming anyone will tell him, will he back off China and take on the American global corporations?

The loss of middle class jobs has had a dire effect on the hopes and expectations of Americans, on the American economy, on the finances of cities and states and, thereby, on their ability to meet pension obligations and provide public services, and on the tax base for Social Security and Medicare, thus threatening these important elements of the American consensus. In short, the greedy corporate elite have benefitted themselves at enormous cost to the American people and to the economic and social stability of the United States.

Iraqi cleric Sadr scales back his militia

Jun 29th 2018, 16:18, by ladylove

Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, whose political bloc came first in a May parliamentary election, said on Thursday he was scaling back his militia to strengthen the incoming government and its security forces.

The cleric’s list won the most seats in an election marred by low turnout and allegations of fraud.

He is currently embroiled in negotiations with the heads of other blocs over forming the next government, in which he is expected to play a leading role.

Sadr said in a handwritten order published on his website that his Saraya al-Salam (Peace Companies) militia must disband in all cities except for the capital Baghdad and the cities of Karbala and Samarra, both homes to holy Shi’ite shrines.

The cleric had earlier this month called for a nationwide disarmament campaign after an arms cache exploded in his stronghold district of Sadr City in Baghdad, killing 18 people. Political opponents said the cache had belonged to his militia.

His Thursday order called on his men to store arms in a manner that protects civilians. All the militia’s leaders except those in the three named cities were prohibited from “activities on the ground”.

Trump’s Middle East Peace Plan: Doomed To Failure

Jun 29th 2018, 16:11, by ladylove

If Kushner believes that a slight uptick in average household income will obscure Palestinian concerns about settlements, refugees, Jerusalem, and the very nature of their national existence, he is gravely mistaken. But the entire interview seems to reflect just such a view. Referring to Palestinian spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh’s statement that the US efforts were doomed, Kushner remarked that the “Palestinian leadership is saying those things because they are scared we will release our peace plan and the Palestinian people will actually like it because it will lead to new opportunities for them to have a much better life.”

These statements make it clear that Kushner has not only misunderstood the Palestinian leadership, but Palestinians in general. US negotiators have routinely, and justifiably, been accused of being deaf to the pulse of the Palestinian people, but Kushner seems even more hard of hearing than usual. And there is virtually no chance that Greenblatt, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, or certainly Trump himself know any more about Palestinian sentiments than Kushner does.

Bay Area Muslim Leader Has Her Award Rescinded by Interfaith Group After Pro-Israel Activists Objected

Jun 29th 2018, 16:09, by Mike Rivero

But in late May, PACT’s executive director told Billoo that numerous pro-Israel groups and synagogues were vehemently objecting to the choice of Billoo. These individuals and groups specifically objected to several tweets Billoo had posted that were harshly critical of the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians, as well as her criticisms of the Anti-Defamation League for defending Israeli aggression against Gazans.

During those initial discussions, according to Billoo, PACT proposed possible solutions, such as creating “dialogue circles” as part of the event and adding a pro-Israel honoree. Billoo regarded both proposals as acceptable.

But such proposals did not mollify her pro-Israel critics. PACT returned to Billoo and suggested that they instead recognize CAIR rather than Billoo specifically, or that they choose a different CAIR official to honor. But Billoo refused, on the ground that they had already publicly announced the award and that pro-Israel groups had no right to dictate which Muslim leaders are acceptable and which are not.

Yemen President Rejects UN Deal to Take Hodeidah, Raising Fear for Civilians

Jun 29th 2018, 16:08, by ladylove

The fate of the Yemeni aid port of Hodeidah is in many ways the fate of millions of civilians across Northern Yemen, who rely on it as a sole source of food and medicine. The city is under attack by Saudi-led forces, and that is a massive risk.

The UN has tried to prevent this by negotiating a takeover of the port, an idea supported by the Houthi rebels who hold it. The deal, however, appears to have failed, with Saudi-backed President Hadi rejecting any deal to let the UN manage the city as an aid port.

Barring any changes, this leaves the Saudi-led forces continuing an invasion, reliant heavily on airstrikes and drawing increasingly near the ports themselves. This raises the likelihood of the port being severely damaged, and inoperable.

Saudi Arabia’s Misleading Email to Congress After Bombing of MSF Cholera Hospital

Jun 29th 2018, 16:04, by ladylove

The Saudis must have been especially worried this time around. In the hours following the bombing of the MSF facility that Monday, June 11, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis acknowledged that the U.S. military advises the Coalition of “no-fire areas where there are civilians, where there’s mosques, hospitals.” When asked specifically about the cholera hospital, Mattis said emphatically, “We have to find out what happened there.” Mattis told the gaggle of reporters that he “just got off the phone” with Gen. Joseph Votel, the head of U.S. Central Command, and that Votel’s staff was “scrambling” to determine what the Coalition had done. It was another admission on Mattis’ part that, at least this time, the United States would independently assess the Coalition’s actions, a responsibility which the Pentagon has not always acknowledged.

But the Saudis were right about one thing. The low-level MSF employee had stated in his letter, “I would like to explain that there has been an error from our side as we failed to inform you officially of the location of the new site.” But the Saudis made a serious mistake in using the letter. The MSF employee was wrong about his facts, and the Saudi government knew or should have known that. In reality, MSF had notified the Saudi Coalition 12 times of the coordinates of the cholera treatment center. Twelve. For its part, the Coalition had acknowledged these coordinates at least nine times in writing. The Kingdom omitted that information in its email to Congress.

Dem congresswoman among anti-Trump protesters arrested inside Capitol office building

Washington Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal is among the more than 500 protesters who were arrested inside a Capitol office building on Thursday while demonstrating against President Trump’s policies on illegal immigration.

The protest, which included hundreds demonstrators, took place in the Hart Senate Office Building. The protesters were calling for the abolishment of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, and were heard chanting “abolish ICE.” Most of the protesters were female.

Eva Malecki, a spokeswoman for the United States Capitol Police, said 575 individuals were charged with unlawfully demonstrating in the atrium of the building.

Trump privately floats plan to make a deal with Putin on Syria

Jun 29th 2018, 16:00, by malterwitty

President Donald Trump once again raised the idea of pulling the US out of Syria this week — this time privately during a meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan at the White House, according to two diplomatic sources familiar with the sit-down.

The two leaders discussed Syria at length. One source told CNN that Trump believes he can strike a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a so-called exclusion zone in southwest Syria that will allow the US to “get out ASAP.”

Why Palestine Matters

Jun 29th 2018, 15:57, by ladylove

Why does Palestine matter? It’s a question I ask myself nearly every day. Another way to put it is, “Is the devotion of major attention to the plight of the Palestinians an obsession worthy of suspicion or an appropriate response to a grave historic and continuing injustice?

No one will be surprised when I reply that major attention is an appropriate response. Palestine matters and should matter. I will try to explain why.

First, perhaps most basically, the sheer cruelty – the scope of the violation of human, i.e., natural individual, rights – of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians warrants the concern of all who favor freedom and other (classical) liberal values: justice, social cooperation, free exchange, and peace.

Let’s start with the Occupied Palestinian Territories. As B’Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, says front and center on its website: “Israel’s regime of occupation is inextricably bound up in human rights violations.” No one who sheds the blinders of the Official Narrative can help but feel pain over the institutional barriers to normal life, not to mention the literal destruction of life, that are regular features of Israel’s rule in the West Bank (with nearly 3 million Palestinians), East Jerusalem (over 300,000), and Gaza Strip (nearly 2 million). It is no exaggeration to describe the system as an instance of apartheid, which is the word used by Israeli human-rights organizations and former government officials.

Footage shows cops waiting in hallway during Las Vegas massacre

Jun 29th 2018, 15:56, by Mike Rivero

Newly released body camera footage shows Las Vegas police officers pausing for several minutes in the hallway of the Mandalay Bay hotel — as mass shooter Stephen Paddock guns down 58 people on the floor directly above them.

“Holy sh-t that’s rapid fire,” officer Cordell Hendrex utters in the chilling video, reacting to Paddock’s gunfire — which he later described as “like thunder all around and above us,” according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The officer and his first-day trainee, Elif Varsin, stayed on the 31st floor for four-and-a-half minutes, even as they heard the shooter’s position reported as “the 32nd floor, room 135.”

"This Has Become An Issue" – Beijing Denies US Request For Talks Over Airline Dispute

Jun 29th 2018, 15:53, by Mike Rivero

President Trump’s trade spat with China isn’t the only source of tension between the world’s two largest economies. Since even before Trump’s inauguration, the US’s relationship with Taiwan has become an increasingly sensitive issue in Beijing – particularly after Trump publicly mused about abandoning the US’s long-standing “One China” policy. Beijing has retaliated by holding a massive live-fire exercise in the Strait of Taiwan (showing off China’s expanding military might). And in what looks like a test of corporate allegiance, Beijing has also instigated a mini-diplomatic crisis over its demands that foreign airlines refer to Taiwan on their websites as “Taiwan, China” – a request the White House has dismissed as “Orwellian nonsense.”

Their geopolitical trajectory is increasingly drifting away from Washington and moving closer to China, Russia, India and Iran.

Cash Is Pouring Into The Riskiest Subprime Auto Debt

Jun 29th 2018, 15:51, by Mike Rivero

Money is once again pouring into high-yielding, low quality asset-backed securities and collateralized loan obligations, as investors are once again taking significant risks in the euphoria-driven chase for yield. As Bloomberg reports, a decade after the great financial crisis, investors are again making the same mistakes that led us to financial turmoil in 2008. Thanks to suppressed volatility, and cheap debt investors are getting greedy and are seeking out higher yields.

According to the report, high yield ABS are on track this year to account for its biggest slice of the overall sector since before the financial crisis, rising to 1.5%, up from 0.3% in 2012. At the same time, the riskiest CLO notes are now a larger percentage of the market than they’ve been in two years.

The film, “Boundaries,” starring Fonda in a supporting role earned just over $30,000 since it’s release.

REAL.video launch update from founder Mike Adams: Feature set, affiliate program, editorial coverage and more

Jun 29th 2018, 15:49, by Mike Rivero

REAL.video is getting close to launch. We’re aiming to have some very basic functionality up and running by July 4th, with many additional features rolling out throughout the month of July.

Watch my video below for more details, but the upshot is:

Basic functionality is nearly in place, with a hoped-for launch of a few video channels on July 4th. (“Basic functionality” means videos are playable on multiple devices and can be embedded in web pages.)

User comments will be functioning but are relying on Disqus, which engages in some user tracking that we don’t like, so our long-term plan is to replace Disqus with something better.

We’re launching shop.REAL.video as an e-commerce platform with affiliate links to video content owners, meaning that those who upload videos can also choose to opt-in for the affiliate program and earn a percentage of sales through shop.REAL.video. (Explained more in the video, below.) We do all order fulfillment and customer support.

We’re also launching an editorial push for newsworthy videos which get uploaded to REAL.video. At our discretion, we will select videos each day for editorial coverage, and we’ll write about those videos and the video creators. These stories will be syndicated across all the websites we publish, which currently includes over 350 unique news sites. (A typical story will qualify for syndication to perhaps 10 or so websites, depending on the subject matter.)

Content deemed dangerous to society will be banned. This includes pro-communism, gun confiscation, anti-liberty content and similar topics which are described in more detail in our upcoming community guidelines to be posted on REAL.video.

Contact group says warring sides in Ukraine reach new ceasefire

Jun 29th 2018, 15:48, by ladylove

The Ukrainian government has reached a fresh ceasefire with pro-Russia forces fighting in the east of the country, a contact group says, raising hopes for an end to a deadly four-year-long conflict.

The truce, which is slated to come into force on Sunday, was agreed at a meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group (TCG) on Ukraine in the Belarusian capital city of Minsk on Wednesday, said Darka Olifer, the spokesperson for Ukraine’s representative in the group.

The TCG, which comprises representatives from Kiev, Moscow, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), was formed in May 2014 in an attempt to facilitate a diplomatic solution to the war in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine, collectively known as the Donbass.

House passes $675B defense spending bill

Jun 29th 2018, 15:42, by ladylove

The House easily passed $675 billion in defense spending Thursday after lawmakers tacked on provisions to bar the Pentagon from doing business with the Chinese telecom firms ZTE and Huawei and to pave the way for a dual purchase of aircraft carriers by the Navy.

The vote was 359-49, with 137 Democrats joining all but three Republicans to pass the fiscal 2019 defense appropriations bill.

The legislation would continue Republican-led efforts to build up the military. Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas), who chairs the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, called the legislation the “next critical step” in boosting U.S. military might.

“The priorities funded in this bill not only stop the erosion, but also enable our military to restore and increase their competitive advantage,” Granger said on the floor.

The president also reaffirmed that there was “no Collusion and the Witch Hunt, headed by 14 Angry Democrats and others who are totally conflicted, is Rigged!”

Federal judge EXCORIATES Muller: ‘Even a blind person can see’ Manafort indictment ploy to GET TRUMP

Jun 29th 2018, 15:38, by Mike Rivero

As reported by The Washington Times, Ellis excoriated Mueller and his Democrat-aligned prosecutors because he knows exactly what’s going on: Mueller’s using Manafort in a blatant attempt to snag POTUS on something.

Judge Ellis, sitting in the Eastern District of Virginia, expressed dismay at the special counsel system and at Mr. Mueller in particular.

“Given the investigation’s focus on President Trump’s campaign, even a blind person can see that the true target of the Special Counsel’s investigation is President Trump, not defendant, and that defendant’s prosecution is part of that larger plan,” he wrote.

Rosenstein Refuses To Discuss Whether Obama Spied On Trump Campaign

Jun 29th 2018, 15:37, by Mike Rivero

Facing a grilling during the House Committee on the Judiciary hearing this morning, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein refused to say whether or not any member of the Obama administration tried to undermine President Donald Trump’s campaign leading up to the 2016 presidential election.

“What did the DOJ or FBI do in terms of collecting information, spying, or surveillance on the Trump campaign be it via Stefan Halper or anybody else working on behalf of the agencies?” GOP Rep. Ron DeSantis of Florida asked Rosenstein during a House Committee on the Judiciary hearing Thursday.

“As you know, congressman, I’m not permitted to discuss classified information in an open setting but I can assure you we are working with oversight committees and producing all relevant evidence to allow them to answer those questions,” Rosenstein answered.

Unarmed black man tasered by police in the back while sitting on a curb

A Pennsylvania mayor has responded to a viral video showing a police officer tasing an unarmed black man who was siting down on a sidewalk curb in the back.

Danene Sorace, the mayor of Lancaster, said that an investigation into the incident on Thursday made her upset, and that the video has reaffirmed her commitment to deploy body cameras to all officers in the City of Lancaster.

“Like you, when I saw the video I was upset by it and it is of great concern to me,” Ms Sorace said in her statement. “We take the use of force very seriously”.

Officers repeatedly tell him to extend his legs straight out, and he then extends them slightly. When an officer tells him to cross his legs, his feet move towards each other and the officer shoots the electric charge into his back.

Right Stuff for Life Found on Small Saturn Moon

Jun 29th 2018, 15:13, by Mike Rivero

On Saturn’s small moon Enceladus, perpetual fountains of alien seawater launch all sorts of curious stuff into space: water, salt, silica, and even simple carbon-containing compounds fly into the void—many of which are ingredients for life as we know it.

Now, scientists working with data from a dead spacecraft have discovered something even more potentially intriguing: heavy organic compounds containing hundreds of atoms arranged in rings and chains. These are the most complex organic molecules uncovered so far at Enceladus, and—sorry, Europa—they may make the moon the most promising place in our solar system to search for life beyond Earth.

“What we know today is telling us that Enceladus is an outstanding target to go look for life, and there may be microbes living in that ocean today,” says Cornell University’s Jonathan Lunine.

Lieberman: Israel will not accept Syria refugees

Jun 29th 2018, 15:11, by Mike Rivero

More than 150,000 people in southwestern Syria have been forced to flee since the Syrian government launched an offensive to recover an area bordering Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from opposition groups, a monitoring group said.

The Israeli military said an increased number of Syrian civilians had been spotted in refugee camps on the Syrian side of the Israel occupied Golan Heights over the past few days, and that it had overnight sent aid supplies at four locations “to Syrians fleeing hostilities”.

A number of Israeli settlers yesterday seized a Palestinian house in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, local media reported.

The spokesman of the Youth Against Settlements (YAS) movement, Mohammed Azghir, told Safa that the settlers took over a Palestinian house in the neighbourhood of Qaitun.

“The house is currently occupied by the settlers and is being guarded by the occupation’s military forces,” Azghir added.

He explained that the area has been besieged by the Israeli forces since 2001, noting that Palestinians have not been allowed to access it.

In 2016, the UN Security Council overwhelmingly approved Resolution 2334 which considered Israeli settlements in the 1967 occupied territories, including East Jerusalem, as “illegal”.

US Jews ditch Birthright programme to join anti-occupation Hebron tour

Five American Jews visiting Israel as part of the Birthright Israel programme ditched the trip yesterday in protest at the programme’s “treatment of the occupation and joined a tour of Hebron led by anti-occupation army veterans’ group Breaking the Silence”, reported Haaretz.

According to the paper, one of those who left the group said Birthright, which brings young Jewish adults to Israel for a free trip, “is not providing the kind of education that we really need…and is telling a one-sided story. This is not fair, and we deserve the truth”.

Haaretz reported that the five individuals “live-streamed the incident on Facebook, where they are seen leaving the bus and arguing with their guide and with fellow participants. They also published a statement on a Twitter account”.

Israel official declares West Bank plot ‘state land’, then builds illegal outpost on it

Jun 29th 2018, 15:07, by Mike Rivero

An employee of Israel’s Civil Administration – the Defence Ministry-run body which manages the day to day affairs of the military occupation – declared a plot of land in the occupied West Bank to be state land and “after leaving his job, set up an illegal outpost on it”, reported Haaretz.

The settlement outpost, located in the Gush Etzion bloc of colonies south of Jerusalem, “now contains a farm and a guesthouse”, the paper notes, whose profits “go to a company established by the former Civil Administration employee, Yossi Levitt”.

The outpost, Tzurei Ye’elim, “was built entirely without permits”. A demolition order was issued against one of its buildings but has never been carried out.
